We are have a beautiful tradition in Alegría - our annual Freedom Fest — a joyful, radical, re telling of a freedom story.
Whether you’ve done this a hundred times or have no idea what charoset is (yet), come with an open heart and an open mind. Together, we’ll share our stories of freedom and break matzah.
🕰️ The Rough Schedule:
4:30 PM – Arrive, mingle, find your table, admire the centerpieces (or pretend to help set them up)
5:00 PM – Ritual kicks off (brace for meaning, music, and maybe some emotional breakthroughs)
6:00 PM – Dinner break! Let the feasting begin
6:45 PM – A few final questions, one last symbolic sip, and maybe some hugs
7:00 PM – Dance Party with DJs
🥘 What to Bring (Besides Your Glorious Self & a Potluck Dish):
Bring a potluck dish of your choice. Some people like to make sweet carrot dishes — but please do NOT bring things that have yeast in them — cookies or breads — nope. Here are some ritual things you can bring if you want and requests:
- Candlesticks & Candles – Every table gets two. Got spares? Bring ‘em! And don’t forget a lighter unless you want to rub sticks together. Dont have any — ? no worries — someone at your table will
- Charoset – Apple, wine, nutty goodness. It’s symbolic mortar — but tastier. If you want to try your hand at some ritual deliciousness — this is one possibility. We will have it also so you don’t have to make it
- Juice – Not everyone’s drinking wine, so bring a bottle or two for your table. Bonus points if you bring a fancy cup!
- Radishes – Bitter herbs, but make it rooty. Bring enough chopped radish for your table. Don’t worry if not, Joan will make plenty!!
- Salt + Bowl – We will be dipping parsley in a bowl with salt.If you have a special bowl you like — bring it — we will bring the salt. If you’re flying solo, don’t worry—we share.
- Parsley – Green, fresh, symbolic. Yes please.
- Appetizers – Hummus? Sure! Bread? Nope. Unless it’s homemade matzah, then you’re a hero.
- Hard-Boiled Eggs – Optional but traditional. Symbol of rebirth and also a great snack. Obviously not for everyone. If you don't eat eggs – bring an orange
- Sweet Carrots or Sweet Potatoes – For that sweet dish that warms the soul (and balances all the saltwater).
- Silverware – Help us avoid plastic guilt and bring your own set.
- Wine and/or Grape juice– we will drink four cups. Enough said.
Need inspo? Try this Sephardic recipe or this chunky version.
Want to try making matzah? Here’s how or this version
We can’t wait to gather, reflect, celebrate, and dance with you. Bring your spirit, your sense of humor, and an open heart and an open mind.
With joy and anticipation,
💛 The Alegria Freedom Fest Crew
