About Alegría
A community-run eco-village in the hills of San Mateo
Alegría Village (Comunidad Alegría) is an intentional eco-village in San Mateo, Alajuela, Costa Rica. Neighbors care for 70 hectares (170 acres) of hillside with food forests, edible gardens, springs and creeks, and reforested wildlife corridors.
Life here follows permaculture values: earth care, people care, and fair share. The community farm feeds every household, shared spaces like the Hive and the yoga shala bring neighbors together, and a homeowners’ association and resident-led committees make decisions together.
