Creating Alegria’s Syntropic Food Forest

🌳 Regenerating Our Land, One Tree at a Time

This year we are embarking on a beautiful transformative journey: We’re turning our Zone 2 — the forest area across from the Yoga Shala — into a vibrant, living syntropic agroforestry system! At the annual HOA meeting, the community just approved the budget, enabling the Farm Review Committee (FRC) to start activating the project!!

We have an opportunity to create something truly special together! This is an invitation. We invite you to be part of this exciting project: to get your hands in the soil, to learn, to plant, to connect, to nurture, and celebrate together as we regenerate our land and grow an abundance of food for our community and future generations!

What is syntropic agroforestry?

Syntropic agroforestry is a regenerative farming method that mimics the structure and function of natural forest ecosystems. This approach aims to enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and improve crop productivity. It involves planting various species together in layers, promoting natural processes to create a self-sustaining and resilient agricultural system.

Key Principles

Layered Planting

  • Stratification: Different plant species are grown in layers, similar to a forest. This maximizes sunlight capture and space utilization.
  • Polyculture: Multiple crop species are cultivated together, fostering synergistic benefits and resilience against pests and diseases.

Natural Processes

  • Succession: The system encourages natural plant succession, allowing for a mix of fast-growing and slow-maturing plants. This ensures continuous harvests over time.
  • Active Management: Farmers engage in practices like pruning and biomass recycling to enrich the soil and promote growth.

What needs to be done?

Our land already holds a beautiful foundation of tree lines. We want to strengthen these lines by planting more intensively, starting in July. This project has three major steps that the Alegria Community and Farm team will need to carry out for the project to be successful.

1) Preparing the soil. This will be the most intensive job in this project. However, the FRC has decided to purchase a rototiller to make the work of preparing the soil for planting more efficiently.

2) Sourcing and germinating many of these plants. It is a sizable list but doable, and the plants are selected to be relatively easy to find in the area.

3) This project requires a significant amount of mulch. Making wood chips in the dry season will go a very long way towards meeting the soil covering needs but will require a continual focus from the team.

How can you contribute?

We know it might sound overwhelming — and yes, it’s a big project! That’s why the FRC, with the help of Scott Gallant from Porvenir design, will break everything down into small, manageable tasks.

These are some of the ways that you can participate:

  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Come to the volunteer times scheduled for every week! From now on, all activities will be dedicated to supporting the syntropic project, focusing on making cuttings and propagating seeds. Days and times are listed on our web pages
  • 🧉 Make snacks and/or refreshments for Saturday celebrations. Every Saturday we will finish the community activity with some healthy snacks/cakes and refreshments to celebrate our joint efforts. Contact XX if you would like to contribute.
  • 🌱 Collect the seeds of native trees. Attached is a list of the seed we need, first and foremost those for March and April.
  • 🫙 Donate your glass jars! We need lots of glass jars to keep the seed in. So even if you don’t have seeds, we appreciate your empty (and clean) jars. Bring them to the farm (talk to Bryan).

Your energy, presence, and love for the earth are the seeds that will make this dream a reality.

Let’s create a lush, thriving future — together!
