Yin Yoga
Yin yoga works very differently from more active styles because it emphasizes the nervous system as much as the body’s deeper tissues. In this practice, we use yoga bolsters to support the body so muscles can soften and the nervous system can shift toward a calmer, parasympathetic state. It is also a less performative form of yoga: much of the practice happens close to the ground, often lying down, with attention turned inward. There’s no “good” or “bad” at yin—each person is simply having their own experience. Because of this, it’s accessible to people of all ages and levels of familiarity with yoga. With the body supported and the mind settling, we can safely work with connective tissues—like fascia, ligaments, and joint capsules—rather than primarily engaging muscles. By holding poses for several minutes, yin yoga applies slow, sustained stress that helps fascia become more pliable and hydrated, improving mobility and easing stiffness, while also supporting gradual tissue remodeling linked to collagen turnover.
Because the body is supported and the nervous system is more at ease, yin yoga can gently increase passive range of motion, particularly in areas like the hips and spine. The extended holds may also enhance the movement of fluids through connective tissues, supporting lubrication and nutrient exchange—often felt as a softening or release. At the same time, remaining still with mild sensation and finding the ‘sweet spot’ between total relaxation and mild discomfort, trains the nervous system to tolerate discomfort without bracing, which can reduce protective muscle tension around joints and cultivate a deeper
